Transforming mobility in the heart of the Netherlands
One of the most transformative infrastructure projects in the Netherlands is the redevelopment of the Public Transport Terminal (OVT) in Utrecht. Previously, the station faced major challenges: limited transfer options between trains and buses, unsafe traffic conditions, and a lack of public space. Movares was commissioned to reimagine and redesign the terminal – turning one of the country’s busiest stations into a fully integrated hub for trains, buses, trams, bicycles, and taxis. Designed with a focus on accessibility, sustainability, and efficient flow, OVT Utrecht now successfully manages diverse traffic streams and serves as a model for multimodal transport integration.
A large-scale transport hub with urban impact
Utrecht Central Station now features 21 tracks and 11 platforms, accommodating up to 300,000 passengers per day. With expected annual passenger volumes exceeding 100 million by 2030, the station is a critical node in the Dutch public transport network.
Beyond mobility, the terminal functions as a vibrant urban center. Shops, offices, housing, and public spaces are integrated into the design, creating a lively and accessible city district where infrastructure and urban life come together.
The world’s largest bicycle parking facility
A key element of the project is the development of the world’s largest bicycle parking facility, with capacity for 12,500 bicycles. Designed to support Utrecht’s position as a leading cycling city, the facility combines functionality, safety, and user experience. Key features include:
- smart check-in and check-out systems
- real-time availability information
- safe and intuitive routing for cyclists
- high-quality amenities for daily users
This innovative approach sets a new international benchmark for large-scale bicycle parking and cycling infrastructure.
Integrating solucions for mobility systems
The redevelopment of Utrecht Central Station demonstrates how integrated design can improve mobility in dense urban environments. By combining technical expertise with a deep understanding of passenger flows and user behaviour, complex transport systems are brought together into one efficient and future-proof solution.
A future-ready mobility hub
Utrecht Central Station is now a model for multimodal transport integration, enhancing accessibility, safety, and urban quality at scale.
The project delivers:
- seamless connections between transport modes
- improved passenger experience and flow
- high-capacity, future-proof infrastructure
- strong integration with the surrounding city
Together, this creates a resilient and sustainable mobility hub that supports both daily travellers and long-term urban development.
