Paris has unveiled a cutting-edge bicycle parking facility at Gare du Nord, designed to accommodate up to 1,200 bicycles. With seamless access from the cycling network and integrated wayfinding that provides real-time space availability, this facility draws inspiration from our successful designs at Amsterdam and Utrecht Central Stations. Movares was chosen because of our extensive knowledge and expertise of bike parking facilities, applied in different settings all with its’ own unique features and challenges alike. Catering to both short and long-distance travelers as well as residents, it marked a significant step toward transforming Paris into a more bicycle-friendly city ahead of the 2024 Olympics.
The facility at Gare du Nord is one of 19 projects where Movares applied its Dutch expertise in bike parking and infrastructure to enhance the designs in Paris. The focus was on the setup of the parking, addressing practicalities like an efficient check-in/check-out system, rack placement, accommodation for various bike types, and routing to the parking area. Each location was designed for easy bicycle access from a bidirectional cycling route that connects directly to the station. The parking incorporates key features from Dutch facilities, including two-tiered racks, a guarded entrance, and repair stations. Movares was chosen for this project, given its extensive experience in designing bicycle parking solutions for facilities ranging from small to those accommodating thousands of bicycles.
Insights from Movares
In 2022, we hosted a group from France to explore Dutch bicycle parking solutions, fostering valuable exchanges between key stakeholders like Inddigo, Île-de-France Mobilités, and the City of Paris. This visit revealed how seamlessly bicycle parking can be integrated into station areas, essential for encouraging cycling as part of the daily commute.
Cultural exchange
Working in a different context provided fresh insights into local methods and tools. While Dutch bicycle parking focuses on practicality, the Parisian approach also prioritizes aesthetics, especially in historic stations like Gare du Nord. This project challenged us to balance security, functionality, and visual appeal, ensuring that the facility not only meets the needs of cyclists but also enhances the urban landscape. We are incredibly proud to have contributed to this landmark project, showcasing a commitment to sustainable transportation and making Paris a more inviting city for cyclists.
