Improving bicycle parking and bike–train integration

To support Bern’s ambition for better cycling infrastructure, Movares reviewed the plans for three new Velostations. Our role was to assess the proposed designs and provide targeted recommendations. Movares was invited to Bern, Switzerland to provide expert insights on how to enhance the existing designs and align them with international best practices while respecting the unique Swiss context. Our input focused on improving the bike parking design with regards to the functionality, user experience, and integration with the city’s mobility network. Apart from the technical feedback, we also focused on an optimal integration as part of the bike-train intermodality.

Inspiring design for bicycle parking facilities

In addition to technical recommendations, Movares developed an inspirational booklet to support the design and decision-making process.

This booklet highlights proven strategies for bicycle parking design, including:

  • efficient and space-saving layouts
  • accessibility and user-friendly design
  • integration with public transport networks
  • future-ready solutions for growing cycling demand
Practical guidance for scalable and user-friendly solutions.

The booklet serves as a practical resource for planners and policymakers in Bern and offers valuable insights for cities across Switzerland aiming to improve their cycling infrastructure.

Why high-quality bicycle parking matters

Well-designed bicycle parking facilities are essential for successful cycling policies. They improve accessibility, encourage active travel, and strengthen the connection between cycling and public transport.

By investing in user-friendly, integrated Velostations, cities like Bern can accelerate the transition toward sustainable urban mobility and reduce pressure on existing transport systems.
