Movares was engaged to conduct a feasibility study for the addition of a third track between Lokeren and Sint-Niklaas on Line 59 to address the anticipated rise in train traffic over the next decade. Initially focused on this section of the line, the project scope was later expanded to include the broader route from Gent Sint-Bernadettestraat to Melsele, and extending to the freight track towards the Port of Antwerp.

The study’s goal was to identify the necessary infrastructure upgrades and evaluate their impact on the surrounding environment, ensuring that the proposed solutions would meet the growing demands of rail traffic while integrating smoothly into the local landscape.

Collaborative Approach and Project Insights

Through close collaboration with TUC Rail, Infrabel, and NMBS, Movares successfully developed solutions that balanced technical requirements with environmental and spatial considerations. Despite challenges that arose during the project, including the development of new infrastructure variants, the team adapted, ensuring the final outcomes aligned with the project’s objectives and timeline.

Sustainable and Adaptive Solutions

Throughout the process, Movares was committed to sustainability and innovation, using remote collaboration tools to manage project developments and overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study marks an important step in expanding the capacity of Belgium’s rail network, ensuring it is prepared to meet future transportation demands.
